Week 6:  October 1st - 7th

Wow--October already... it will be the end of the quarter before you know it, so please make sure you are getting your work completed and handed in on time!!

Menus for the lunch offerings can be downloaded at the right. The Class of 2018 will have lunch available from Taste Unlimited on Mondays; The Class of 2020 offers lunch from SaladWorks on Tuesdays; the Class of 2019 offers lunch from Tropical Smoothie on Wednesdays; and the Class of 2018 offers lunch from Firehouse Subs on Thursdays. Students may order pizza through the main office for lunch on Fridays.

On Tuesday, at 10:15, AC Canupf, our admissions rep from Guilford College, will be here to introduce you to Guilford College; we currently have at leas two graduates attending Guilford! Seniors and Juniors are invited to come and ask questions!

Also on Tuesday Friends School cooks and serves a meal at the JCOC, so if you are looking for a community service opportunity, check this out.

Don't forget, Class of 2019, Friday is the first Friday of the month--BREAKFAST!  This month we have the Class of 2020 joining us as our guests.  Check Jupiter if you cannot remember what you signed up to bring.  Due to popular request, I will be making meatballs...

On Saturday, from 9:00 until noon, I will present the annual College Counseling Workshop in the English Room. This workshop is designed for Juniors, but Seniors who were unable to attend last year may join us. Please let me know by Friday afternoon at 2:00 if you will be attending so that I have enough materials and food for everyone!



Advanced Composition: Please remember to bring a book to read for SSR, your textbook, and your CHARGED ChromeBook to class each day! We will continue with Chapter 11: “Cause and Effect—Explaining Why” in the Strategies book. We have several examples of Cause and Effect we will read:
  • “Old Father Time Becomes a Terror”
  • “Why We Keep Stuff”
  • “Why Marriages Fail”
  • “Black Men and Public Space”
You will have time in Writing Workshop to revise your first paper, the Classification Paper, which is due on October 6th.  Note: journal entries are due by 4:00 on Friday.


American Short Story: We will continue with Unit One, “Literature of the 1920s and 1940s.” On Tuesday we will be watching the two film versions of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty [1947 and 2013]. Then we will read two more selections from the 1920s to 1940s:
  • “The Lottery”
  • “Miriam”
That will bring us to the end of this unit. Don't forget to bring your book to class EVERY DAY! Remember, you will be writing an essay for this unit, so taking notes as we read will probably be helpful! [Hint: keep track of the vocabulary as this could be part of the unit test, scheduled for Tuesday, October 10th!]


Art History I: This week we continue with the Medieval and Early Renaissance Art unit with a documentary and several chapters from our textbook:
  • Art of the Western World: Art History from Ancient Greece to Andy Warhol, Episode Two: “A White Garment of Churches: Romanesque and Gothic Art”
  • Carolingian and Ottonian Art
  • Romanesque Sculpture
  • Giselbertus: The Sculpture at Autun
  • Romanesque Painting
  • Gothic Art in Northern Europe
  • The Genesis of Italian Painting
  • Italian Gothic Sculpture
  • Giotto di Bondone
  • Italian Gothic Painting
  • Ambrogio Lorenzetti: “The Good Commune”

Don't forget to be working on your assignment for the Ancient Worlds unit, Miniature Masterpieces, which is due October 12th.


Fundamentals of Composition: REMINDER: your revised critique of The Alchemist is due on Monday, October 2nd! Please remember to bring a book to read for SSR. You also need to bring Strategies for Successful Writing and your CHARGED ChromeBook to class EVERY day. This week we will be working on Chapter 5: Narration—Relating Events. Please read this before class on Monday. We will also be looking at your add-on stories, so please have these typed and ready to share in class on Monday!  Note: journal entries are due by 4:00 on Friday.


The Word I—the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible: We will finish watching The Bible Stories: Abraham, and then we will watch Joseph: King of Dreams before moving into Unit Four: Exodus and the Land of Promise:
  • Chapter 7: “Out of Slavery”
  • Chapter 8: “The Wilderness and the Law”
  • Chapter 9: “The Promised Land”
  • Unit Feature: “Exodus and Emancipation”
We may fall behind this week, but we have time to get caught up!
