This is the start of the second quarter, and it's a very short week as we have a Teacher Work Day on Thursday, October 31st and a Faculty Professional Development Day on Friday, November 1st, so we only have classes Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Advanced Composition: Don't forget that you need to turn in your revised Cause and Effect essay on Monday morning! This week we will continue with the Research Strategies section of our textbook, looking at Chapter 23: “Additional Research Strategies: Interviews, Questionnaires, and Direct Observations.” We will spend some time talking about the I-Search interviews [two are required]; you need to get these scheduled quickly! Remember, your I-Search Topic and Executive Summary are due Wednesday, November 13th. Do NOT be late with this milestone due date!
Art History: This week we will explore the High Renaissance, probably getting a bit behind due to a college admissions visit, but we will get as far as we can in The Sixteenth Century:
- The High Renaissance 1: Florence and Rome
- Leonardo da Vinci
- Michaelangelo Buonarroti
- Michaelangelo: The Sistine Chapel Ceiling
Fundamentals of English Composition: This week our focus will be on another variation of expository writing as we turn to Chapter 8: “Illustration: Making Yourself Clear.” Because I was not able to finish evaluating your narrative essays to return them to you last week, I have extended the due date for the Descriptive essay which is now due on Tuesday, November 5th. Don't forget that you need to find a topic for your Process Analysis paper which is still due on Friday, November 15th. Please make sure that you look over the suggestions I have made on your critique and narrative essay in order to review your descriptive essay and make any corrections needed! Also, please don't forget to bring a book [and your journals] EVERY DAY to class for SSR!
Science Fiction/Fantasy: This week we are reading Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles. Reminder, you have a response paper due on Wednesday, November 13th. Select which question you will answer and get started on this! Don’t forget to make two posts to our class blog each week!
The Word--The Old Testament in Art, History, Literature, Music, and Culture: We are slightly behind, and we won't catch up this week, but that's OK—we will make it up next week or the week after. This week we will continue with Unit 5: “Kingdom and Exile” and finish viewing David. If we have time, we will be taking a look at art from the Old Testament through a virtual field trip to the world's great museums. If we do not have time, we will catch this next week.
This Tuesday, October 29th we have Admissions Representatives visiting us from Greensboro College [at 1:00 PM] and Methodist University [at 2:00 PM]. Later that evening, please plan to attend the Virginia Beach City Public Schools College Night—which is open to anyone! Go and meet with representatives from multiple colleges and learn about financial aid opportunities too! This begins at 5:30 PM at the Pavilion, and you may sign up ahead of time.
Have a great week—try not to eat too much candy from Trick or Treating!
