Thank you to everyone who donated time and/or baked goods to our third annual Halloween Carnival--it was another great success! The bake sale made over $100 for the Upper School Activities Committee. We are also responsible for the bake sale/cafe at the school's annual Book and Gift Fair in a few short weeks, so get ready to bake or help us with staffing needs so that we can help the Class of 2012 fund the Prom and other US activities!
Advisory: Pictures were sent home last week--if you plan to keep any of them, please return your payment to the office by this Friday, November 4th. If you do not wish to purchase the pictures, please return them to the office as soon as possible, but not later than Friday, November 4th. Friday is also the first Friday in November, so we need to plan breakfast.... Pancakes, anyone?
Advanced Composition: Bring a book to read for SSR (keep up with your reading journal entries...), and bring your textbook as well. We will look at Chapter 23: "Additional Research Strategies" this week as we continue with the I-Search projects. By now, you should have settled on a topic! Please do NOT procrastinate on this; the I-Search is NOT something you can knock out the night before it is due!
American Short Story: We will continue reading and discussing short stories from the 1950s and the 1960s this week.
Fundamentals of Composition: Bring a book to read for SSR and keep those journals current--hint, hint! We will begin Chapter 8, "Illustration" this week. Your descriptive essays are due on Thursday, November 3rd!
Publications and Media: Keep working on your Public Relations project! Remember, you need to be ready to
"pitch" your campaign to your client on Thursday, November 10th! So get those bumper stickers, print ads, and t-shirts finished!
Public Speaking: Chapter 9: "Presentation Aids" is our focus this week. After working our way through the chapter, you will have an assignment to prove that one picture is worth a thousand words... or at least one word! Your Visual Presentation Aid will be presented to the class on Thursday, November 10th.
The Word: We will finish watching The Ten Commandments and then take a virtual field trip to some of the world's great museums to look at some art depicting characters and events from the Old Testament. The Glogsters were great!
College Counseling: This week Admissions Representatives from MICA [Wednesday], Guilford College [Thursday], and George Mason University [Friday] will be visiting us to speak with anyone who is interested in what these schools have to offer. Please plan to attend and ask questions!
Since we did not have classes on Monday, this is an A week.
