Class of 2015: This week is the Advisory Breakfast as this is the first Friday of the month. Additionally, we need to choose two new people to take out the trash and recycles for the month of November.
Advanced Composition: We begin a two-week exploration of Chapter 12: “Definition—Establishing Boundaries.” Our readings for this method of expository writing will include:
- “The Sweet Smell of Success Isn't All That Sweet”
- “The Blended Economy”
Art History: We will be traveling to Richmond on Tuesday to visit the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, and we have a program presentation [“How to Read a Work of Art”] there at 12:00 noon, so we will need to leave school by 9:00, if you want to get something to eat before the tour, and earlier would be better! Please dress nicely as you will be representing VBFS, and I love it when we get complements from docents about your appearance and manners! PLEASE remember to bring in your permission slips and some money for lunch/snacks for the trip! You will be given an assignment at the museum, The Write Stuff, based on our visit, and this will be due on Tuesday, November 26th. On Thursday we talk about the final project for the course, The Virtual Curator: The 16th and 17th Centuries--due on Thursday, January 16th, and we will be watching The Agony and the Ecstasy, a commercial film about Michelangelo and Pope Julius and their contentious relationship and the amazing work of art which was the result: The Sistine Chapel ceiling.
Fundamentals of English Composition: This week we continue with Chapter 8: “Illustration: Making Yourself Clear.” We will discuss writing an expository essay that uses illustration as its organizing principle, and we will read two illustrative essays:
- “Binge Drinking, A Campus Killer” and
- “Rambos of the Road.”
Science Fiction/Fantasy: You need to finish Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles as your Postcards from Mars are due on Friday, November 8th! We will begin a new book this week, The Pride of Chanur. If you think that Earthmen on Mars had problems, wait until you see what a lone, lost Earthman, Tully, has to deal with as he navigates space as a man allied with giant female felines in Compact Space where the resident species are not only strange, but incredibly dangerous! Reminder, you have a response paper due on Wednesday, November 13th. Select which question you will answer and get started on this! Don’t forget to make two posts to our class blog each week!
The Word--The Old Testament in Art, History, Literature, Music, and Culture: We are slightly behind, and we won't catch up this week, but that's OK—we will get back on track in our reading soon enough! This week we will work on a new assignment involving art and the Old Testament—Illustrating a Common Theme/Motif through Art. We will begin this on Tuesday as several of us will be on the Art History field trip to the Virginia Museum of Fine Art. This minor assignment is due on Friday, November 15th. On Thursday we will finish viewing David and read chapter 11: “The Kingdom Falls” before starting Solomon.
We do not have any college admissions representatives visiting us this week, but the Fall Sports Banquet is scheduled for Friday night. Progress Reports should be coming out some time this week, and I hope all of you are doing well, but I know that some of you are NOT doing as well as you could or should be doing—and what is the most common reason for this? MISSING ASSIGNMENTS/HOMEWORK! Make sure that you are completing and turning in every assignment for every class! The holidays are fast approaching, so stay on track with your work; you do NOT want to get behind [or even further behind for some of you] if your family is planning to travel out of town!
This is an A week.
