- Wednesday at 10:30, Fran Bright will be here from George Mason University
▪Seniors, watch your application deadlines! Remember: LACK OF PLANNING ON YOUR PART DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN EMERGENCY ON MY PART! I have many obligations, including teaching and dealing with requests for transcripts and letters of recommendation from your fellow seniors, and if you overlook a deadline until the last minute, I may NOT be able to accommodate you. This week the college admission reps will begin their fall visits. Please check the College Counseling page and the board in the US hallway for a list of who is coming when. In some cases colleges will be offering on site admission, BUT you need to request a transcript from me at least three days in advance IN WRITING for me to have this ready for you. Getting into college does NOT require luck or knowing the right people. It requires planning, presence, and perseverance. Make a plan, show up, and hold fast!
The Class of 2017 is selling lunch from Taste Unlimited on Tuesdays. Check with Teacher Jeff, or a member of the Class of 2017 to order.
The Class of 2020 is selling Panera on Wednesdays. Please see Teacher Danny or a member of the freshman class for more information on this.
The Class of 2018 is selling Firehouse subs for lunch on Thursdays. Orders MUST be placed by Wednesday afternoon. Please see a member of the Class of 2018 to order. You may download a form from the sidebar.
The Class of 2019 has cheese and pepperoni pizza available from Papa John's on Fridays for $1.50 a slice. This may be pre-ordered on Friday mornings during Advisory. The class is considering making a change to meals ordered from The Daily Grind…
Advanced Composition: Please remember to bring a book to read for SSR every day! Remember, your weekly journal entry MUST be completed by Friday at 4:00 in the Google Doc you have shared with me! This week we will continue with Chapter 12: “Definition,” reading four essays from our textbook:
- “The Sweet Smell of Success Isn’t All That Sweet”
- “The Blended Economy”
- “Introduction” from Nothing Feels Good: Punk Rock, Teenagers, and Emo
- “When is it Rape?”
Art History I: Because I am still worn out from radiation, we will NOT be visiting the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in person, but we will have an assignment from their website which we will discuss on Tuesday. Then we will be watching The Fine Art of Life with Daphne Maxwell Reid, an introduction to the Virginia Museum of Fine Art. We will wrap up the week with The Agony and the Ecstasy—this is a commercial film about Michelangelo, so you have a break from the documentaries.
Film as Literature: Yes—we WILL finish Lawrence of Arabia this week! So, your response to the two David Lean films, Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia will be due on or before Monday, November 16th. Next up is Chapter 5: “Acting.” We have fallen behind with films again, so we will be dropping Fiddler on the Roof, sadly. But I know you will enjoy seeing Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands and Finding Neverland.
Fundamentals of Composition: We will continue with Chapter 8: “Illustration,” and we will read two essays from our textbook:
- “Binge Drinking, A Campus Killer”
- “Rambos of the Road”
Mystery Fiction: We will continue with our reading of The Salaryman’s Wife—you need to have this finished by early next week as the postcards and crime notes are due on Wednesday the 16th! I will have your new blog post up by Monday afternoon, and then you will need to make your original post by Thursday at midnight and the follow-up response to a classmate by Saturday at midnight.
ONLINE CLASSES: Please make sure you are following the pacing guide for the class; remember, regardless of whether or not WE have class/school, Virtual Virginia is available, and you may have assignments due!
This is an A week since we did not have classes on Monday, and there is bound to be a lot of craziness with the election on Tuesday and its aftermath for the rest of the week! Additionally, although we do NOT have Friday, November 11th off for Veterans' Day, you should still remember the sacrifices veterans have made to keep you and America safe and free.
Have a great week!
Teacher Barb :)
