Class of 2015: Don't forget, we signed up to bring/make soup for the Thanksgiving Feast—chicken noodle, clam chowder, or whatever else you like! So, we need to figure out how we are doing this... Additionally, our December monthly breakfast [Friday, December 6th] which we will be having with the seniors, is tentatively planned for The Jewish Mother, so we need to finalize plans for that. Finally, we should plan on something to do as a class for the holidays—skating at Macarthur Center? Touring the Holiday Lights on the Boardwalk? Going to see Santa Clause and having our picture taken with him? The Winter Break will be here before we know it, so we need to get this planned!
US Activities Committee: Reminder, the 8th grade and the Upper School are in the planning stages of "making Christmas" for eight Mattaponi youngsters who would not have Christmas without us. Through Spirit Rising each class has selected at least one child to sponsor by collecting money to buy the gifts, or buying the specific gifts on each child’s list. On December 13th we will hold a “Wrap Party” for “our” kids, wrapping and tagging the gifts for delivery to Spirit Rising. I have the list of children and gifts posted on this page [right sidebar] if you need more information about this service activity.
Advanced Composition: We had a LOT of trouble getting through Chapter 13: “Argument—Convincing Others” last week, so we are a bit behind.... This week we will be looking at twoexamples of Argument from our textbook that we didn't get to last week:
- “Yes, Don’t Impede Medical Progress” and
- “A Journalist’s View of Black Economics.”
Art History I: No surprise, we are a bit behind again... But, we always get caught up, so let's not worry about it! We begin our study of the Baroque Era [the 17th century] with some reading:
- Michaelangelo da Caravaggio;
- Caravaggio: The Conversion of Saint Paul;
- The Carracci and their Pupils; and,
- The High Baroque in Rome.
Fundamentals of Composition: This week we will spend time “just” reading and writing. Please do NOT forget to bring a book for SSR. We will talk about the final project for the class, the Final Literature Project, due on Thursday, January 16th, and during Writing Workshop, you will have time to work on your Illustration essay which is due on Friday, December 6th.
Science Fiction/Fantasy: You need to finish up Pride of Chanur as we need to move on to our next novel, A Wizard of Earthsea. Because of the holiday, I have combined last week and this week's blog posts into one—you need to post twice by midnight on November 3oth, creating an original post about your reading to date and a response to someone else's posting. Remember, if you plan to include information about the ending, please let people know with a notification of a possible spoiler alert! The Post Cards from Tully will be due on Wednesday, December 4th!
The Word: Art, History, Literature, and Music in the Old Testament: We are slightly behind, but I am not too concerned—we will easily get caught up! We will finish watching Exodus and then begin Unit 7A: Writings and Wisdom, reading Chapter 14: “Songs and Poetry” in preparation for selecting a Psalm to “podcast” next week—if we can figure out how to do this!
Don't forget, Tuesday is a full day of school for the Upper School; dismissal time is at 3:25 PM, so please do NOT arrange to leave after the Feast—otherwise, you might be given a referral for skipping!
I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!
Teacher Barb :)
