This week is the beginning of the College Admissions Season; admissions representatives from many local, regional, and national colleges are traveling to high schools and visiting with students. While VBFS is a small school and not on the visiting schedule for many larger colleges and universities, we DO have several reps scheduled to visit, and there is also the annual Virginia Beach City Public Schools College night on Tuesday, October 29th at the Convention Center where you can meet with reps from over 150 colleges, so make plans to attend! Check the US Academic Counseling page for the latest information on rep visits. This week we will have the admissions representative from the University of Virginia—Wise with us on Tuesday at 11:00. UVA-Wise is a real bargain for those who need to keep college expenses as low as possible, and the school is in beautiful southwestern Virginia. Come and learn more about this gem of a school on Tuesday at 11:00 in my classroom!
Advanced Composition: This week we begin looking at causal analysis [cause and effect] in preparation for writing a causal analysis and as a way of looking at Farewell to Manzanar and When the Emperor was Divine. During our writing workshop time, you will have a chance to work on your critique of When the Emperor was Divine [due on Monday, September 30th] and/or you Classification essay which is due on Friday, October 4th. Please do NOT forget to bring a book [your choice] to read during SSR every day!
Art History: Since there are juniors and seniors in this class, I have scheduled the college admission rep visits during our class time on Tuesdays, so we may slide a bit behind. I will adjust the readings as we go along to keep us on track as much as possible. This week we have the rep from UVA-Wise coming during our class on Tuesday, so we will start with the readings from last week at the beginning of the block:
- Roman Art I
- Roman Art II: The Hadriatic Period
- Late Antiquity and Early Christian Art
- Byzantine Art I: Justinian
- Byzantine Art II: Revival and Diffusion
- The Virgin of Vladimir
- Christ in Chora, Constantinople
- Celtic or Insular Art
- “The Perfect Picture”
- “Sound and Fury”
Science Fiction/Fantasy: We will continue watching the 2004 film version of Frankenstein as we finish up the book. Don't forget to keep up with blogging, making sure that you are posting in the correct week! You need to finish up with your reading and think about what you will do for the postcard assignment: Gothic Postcards from the 18th Century; these are due on Friday, October 4th!
The Word—The Old Testament: We have an easy week this week—we are watching Abraham—The Bible Collection and Joseph: King of Dreams. So, sit back and enjoy this laid back week, but do not forget that your Ten Commandments Glog is due Thursday, October 10th!
Reminder, school pictures will be taken next week on Wednesday, October 2nd first thing in the morning, so please dress nicely!
Have a great week!
