Advisory/Class of 2015: Saturday we are planning a trip to Busch Gardens for Hallow Scream with the Class of 2014.... We will talk more about this as the week unfolds!
Advanced Composition: This is a busy week for us as you have two assignments due this week—one on Monday and the other on Friday. So stay on track and turn these in on time! First, your critique of When the Emperor was Divine is due on Monday, September 30th—please do NOT be late with this as you lose points for every day this is late! We will share these aloud before turning them in, so be prepared! Next This we will continue with our study of causal analysis [cause and effect] in preparation for writing a causal analysis. We will read three reading selections from out text and spend most of our time in Writing Workshop working on the Classification Essay which is due on Friday, October 4th. Please do NOT forget to bring a book [your choice] to read during SSR every day! PLEASE NOTE: I have made a few adjustments in your syllabus to correct some mistakes I had made on dates. The revised syllabus can be downloaded from the Advanced Composition class page. The changes I made are in week 6 [date changed from the 26th to the 23rd], week 9 [date changed from the 26th to the 23rd as that is a B week, not an A week], week 14 [date changed from the 19th to 18th], and week 19 [date changed from the 17th to the 15th because this is a B week, not an A week].
Art History: The admissions representative from ODU will be here during class on Tuesday, but we will try to keep to our schedule of readings as much as possible. We have moved into Medieval—my favorite—and Early Renaissance Art and will continue our readings::
- Byzantine Art II: Revival and Diffusion
- The Virgin of Vladimir
- Christ in Chora, Constantinople
- Celtic or Insular Art
- Carolinian and Ottonian Art
- Romanesque Sculpture
- Giselbertus: the Sculpture at Autun
- Romanesque Painting
- Gothic Art in Northern Europe.
Fundamentals of Composition: Please remember to bring a book of your choice to read each day for SSR! Some of you have lost daily participation points for this, so try to remember your books! This week we look at our first major writing assignment: the narrative. We will work on Chapter 5: "Narration—Relating Events" this week and read two selections from the textbook which illustrate the concept of narrative writing:
- “Momma's Encounter”
- “The Scholarship Jacket”
Science Fiction/Fantasy: We will continue with our viewing of Young Frankenstein and have a final discussion for the book, so please have Frankenstein finished by Tuesday! ! You need to finish up with your reading and think about what you will do for the postcard assignment: Gothic Postcards from the 18th Century; these are due on Friday, October 4th! Don't forget to keep up with blogging, and make sure that you are posting in the correct week. We will begin our next book this week: Ender's Game. The plan is to have this finished by the time the new film of the same name comes out!
The Word—The Old Testament: This week we will finish up Joseph: King of Dreams and then move on to Unit 4: Exodus and the Land of Promise:
- Chapter 7: Out of Slavery
- Chapter 8: The Wilderness and the Law
- Chapter 9: The Promised Land
- Unit Feature: Exodus and Emancipation
Reminder, school pictures will be taken on Wednesday, October 2nd first thing in the morning, so please dress nicely!
Have a great week!
