I don't really see many similarities between Tuck Everlasting and Ender's Game, but perhaps one of you will. There ARE some similarities between Frankenstein, The Time Machine, and Ender's Game--in each of these novels a character [Victor, Alexander, and Colonel Graff] goes beyond what we might consider "normal" to fulfill some need: Victor fears/manipulates death and brings his Creature to life; Alexander manipulates time to avoid a death, and Colonel Graff manipulates a little boy, giving him a new "life" at the Battle School. There is a "monster" [The Creature] in Frankenstein, and there is a "monster" [the Uber-Morelock] in The Time Machine. Is there a monster in Ender's Game? And if so, who is it?
Additionally, now that we are concentrating on reading, let's talk about some of the individuals in Ender's Game OTHER than Ender.
First we have Valentine and Peter--Ender's sister and brother--who seem to be working on "saving the world," not from Buggers but from other land-side interests. Do you think it IS possible to impact world opinion as a "lone voice crying out in the wilderness"? [It has, after all, been done BEFORE there was an Internet!] Do you find their plans of using the personas of Locke and Demosthenes believable? What do you think of Colonel Hyrum Graff? Is he just using Ender, or does he really like him? Either way, what makes you think so? Are the conversations in some of the chapters between Graff and Major Anderson useful or distracting? Explain that.
Because we are all in different places in the book right now, try to answer one or more of the questions above without giving away the ending if you have finished the book--or at least note a SPOILER ALERT if you are going to give something away that could spoil someone else's reading pleasure, OK? Enjoy the week's reading, and don't forget to post once in response to THIS entry and then once again in response to a classmate this week before Saturday night, OK? I hope you are enjoying Ender's Game!
NOTE: You need to finish the book this coming weekend as the Postcards from the Battle School are due next Wednesday [the 30th]!
