In this elective course, we will study the Bard’s lighter side--the sonnets and comedies. Plays studied will include As You Like It, Love’s Labour’s Lost, The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew, The Tempest, and Twelfth Night. After reading the original works, film adaptations will be screened. In addition, we hope to see a play in performance at The Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, VA. Reading the plays aloud, writing responses to the works studied, viewing filmed versions of the plays, performing selected scenes, and researching an aspect of Elizabethan life or theatre are the major components of this course.
