Shakespeare's Tragedies & Histories
In this semester length elective course, we will study the Bard’s darker, more serious side—the tragedies and histories. Plays studied will include Hamlet, Henry V, Julius Caesar, King Lear, Macbeth, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, and The Winter’s Tale. After reading the original works, we will view film adaptations of the plays. In addition, we will travel to Staunton, VA, to the American Shakespeare Center's Blackfriars Playhouse to experience Othello in performance on May 1st. Reading the plays aloud, writing responses to the works studied, viewing filmed versions of the plays, performing selected scenes, and researching an aspect of Elizabethan life or theatre are the major components of this course.
